Dear Diary,
So I took a break tonight from my busy writing schedule for a little R&R. I went to go see Avatar with Steph.
First of all, I will say that it's a gorgeous film. The colours are vibrant and it really brings the entire thing to life. After seeing it in 3D, I would be curious to see how well it will translate onto a standard home television.
As for the story of the film, I have mixed feelings about that. It's a decent enough sci-fi story I suppose, with a decent message, but it's awfully predictable. Also, the idea that human greed and overabundance will be are undoing is a somewhat ironic message for US $300+ million film to champion.
I'll have to make a couple other gripes at this point which might not effect audiences outside of Hong Kong. First, the price of a ticket. You see, in Hong Kong, theatres charge extra for both 3D films and overly long films. So the price for one ticket to see Avatar was a whopping HK $110 (US $14)!
My second gripe is that none of the alien language dialogue had English subtitles. Normally, when a film is shown in English with Chinese subtitles, there will also be English subtitles when the spoken language is not English. However, that was not the case with this film, so I was left to guess at the dialogue during those parts.
All that being said, overall, I would say it is a pretty good film. I'd give it four out of five stars, if I thought anyone cared about my opinion.
I remain respectfully yours,
Stephen
